ICAN signs MoU with Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano


The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has signed a Mutual Cooperation Agreement (MCA) with Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano under the ICAN Mutual Cooperation Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI).

ICAN President Isma’ila Muhammadu Zakari said the agreement was aimed at deepening the standards of learning and dissemination of knowledge of Accountancy in Nigerian tertiary institutions for the betterment of the nation.

Speaking during the event held at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, the ICAN President stated that the benefit of high quality Accountancy education to Nigeria could not be quantified nor could they be overstated.

He said the Memorandum of Understanding was essentially a collaboration between ICAN and the university wherein ICAN syllabus for the institute qualifying professional examinations would be integrated with that of the university’s NUC approved curriculum for undergraduate accounting program.

He said that the gesture represents full exemption from foundation and skill levels of ICAN professional examinations.

“It is my pleasure to inform you that the ICAN MCATI visitation team to YMS University having carried out thorough and rigorous review of the overall standards of tuition and learning at the Department of Accounting was satisfied that the department has exceeded the minimum eligibility criteria set by the Council of the Institute and consequently recommended the collaboration and signing of this Mutual Co-operation Agreement with YMS University,” he stated. The president pledged to donate books and computers with accounting software to the university.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Prof. Mustapha Ahmad Isa said the signing of the MoU would enhance learning of Accountancy as a course in the field of study in the Institution, pledging to see to the implementation stage of the MoU. While noting with appreciation the pledge by the ICAN President of donation of teaching materials including books and computers to the university by the professional body, he commended ICAN for its continuous support to the university. The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to produce best graduate not just by regulator (NUC) also by professional bodies. We are happy as the president stated that YUMSU would be a hub of accounting profession.
