About Northwest University, Kano

The Government of Kano State, Nigeria, has established a University known as NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY, Kano. It is going to be a conventional University offering courses and conducting research in various areas of sciences and humanities. Academic activities will commence in October, 2012.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted recognition to the second Kano state-owned university, Northwest University at a ceremony held at the commission’s Conference Hall in Abuja.

The endorsement was announced by the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie, saying that the university has satisfied all criteria for recognition, expressing satisfaction with the speed with which the new university is being developed.

While commending Governor Kwankwaso for his commitment to the educational development of his people, he assured that the commission will provide the necessary support and assistance required to actualize the new university.

Earlier, Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso presented documents including the university’s master plan seeking approval for the establishment of the Northwest University to the commission.

He said the establishment of the second Kano state-owned university is a collective decision of the government and people of Kano state.

The governor further stated that the North-West geographical zone of the country to which Kano belonged was among those classified as Educationally Less Developed States, ELDS.

Meanwhile, the Technical committee for the establishment of the North West University had submitted its report to Governor Kwankwaso at the Malam Aminu Kano Governor’s Lodge, Abuja on Monday.

Submitting the report, chairman of the committee, Professor Lawan Alhassan Bichi who was represented by Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello explained that the committee has drawn up a blueprint for the establishment of the university including its name and master plan, advising Kano state government to establish an Education Trust Fund which should be backed by law to ensure sustainability of the proposed institution.

The chairman said in view of the high population of Kano state and its educational position compared to other states in the federation, there is a very clear demand for an additional university in the state. He therefore described the idea to set up the North West University by the Kwankwaso administration as a laudable.

Receiving the report, Governor Kwankwaso promised that the government will peruse the report of the committee with a view to implementing its recommendations and thanked the members for a job well done.
